The eight canons

Where the words come from, and where to read them in full. Each canon is served from a real published edition, and which edition depends on the language you are reading in.

  • Christian Scripture

The Christian Bible: the Hebrew scriptures together with the writings of the early church.

  • Hebrew Wisdom

The Tanakh: the Hebrew Bible, in the order and the divisions that Jewish tradition gives it.

  • Apocrypha

The deuterocanonical books, held as scripture by Catholic and Orthodox Christians.

  • Buddhism

The early Buddhist discourses, preserved in Pali as the teaching of the Buddha and his community.

  • Taoism

The Tao Te Ching, the short book of verses at the root of Taoist thought.

  • Hindu & Vedic

The Bhagavad Gita, a conversation about duty and detachment, set on the edge of a battlefield.

  • Stoic Philosophy

The Stoic writings of the Roman period, on what is and is not within a person’s control.

  • Secular ReflectionNot in this language yet

The essay tradition: writers examining how to live, making no appeal to the divine.
